A Guide to Pensacola Airshows: Pensacola Beach Airshow & Homecoming Airshow

Love the thrill of high-speed aerial performances? This curated guide by Navarre Beach Properties gives you everything you need to know about Pensacola's two standout aviation events: the July Beach Airshow and the November Homecoming Show.

From the Rockies to the Smokies, from the beaches of North Carolina to right here on Florida's Gulf Coast, every destination has its fair share of great events. But most places have one or two that truly steal the show. In Pensacola, it's all about precision, power, and the kind of sonic thrill that leaves your heart racing.

This is Blue Angels country.

Every year, the U.S. Navy's elite flight demonstration team puts on two jaw-dropping airshows here: in mid-July there's the Pensacola Beach Airshow and in early November at their home base, NAS Pensacola, during the Homecoming Airshow.

Want to know what it's like on the ground? Here's a sneak peek, in case you're short on time (or just wired like one of those F/A-18s).

At Navarre Beach Properties, we've got a variety of gorgeous vacation rentals, and I like to think we're pretty much local experts on all things Navarre Beach (no bragging, promise!) Our destination blog is filled with helpful posts on beach day tips, where to find the best craft beer and even a quick history of Navarre Beach.

But there's always more to discover. Today, I'm bringing you a guide that walks you through both events and is packed with local insights, travel tips, and seasoned suggestions.

Who Are the Blue Angels?

The Mission

Founded in 1946, the Blue Angels are the U.S. Navy's elite flight demonstration squadron, designed to showcase the precision, skill, and innovation of naval aviation. Their mission goes beyond the spectacle; they aim to inspire excellence, discipline, and teamwork in both the military and the public.

Why Pensacola?

Pensacola is their home base, not just a stop on tour. They train year-round at NAS Pensacola, the birthplace of U.S. naval aviation. The Gulf Coast's clear skies and mild weather make it the perfect setting for high-precision flight practice.

Eyes to the Sky

See a six-jet formation overhead? That's likely a Blue Angels practice run, a regular sight here. Spot a big cargo plane leading the charge? That's Fat Albert, their iconic C-130J Super Hercules support aircraft, an essential and crowd-pleasing part of the team.

Event Overview: Two Shows, Two Unique Experiences

Yes, these shows share the same spirit, but they deliver two distinctly different experiences. Here's the lowdown.

1. The Pensacola Beach Airshow (July)

  • Setting: Pensacola Beach, with Casino Beach as the heart of the action

  • Atmosphere: Electric, sun-soaked, and unmistakably coastal

Each July, the summer sky over Pensacola Beach becomes a canvas for smoke trails, barrel rolls, and thunderous maneuvers. This beloved tradition blends a classic beach day with front-row seats to one of the most impressive flight performances in the country.

Schedule Highlights

  • Wednesday: "Breakfast with the Blues"
Around 7:30 a.m., the Blue Angels perform an arrival flyover to mark their center points. It's casual, early, and the perfect excuse for coffee on the sand.

  • Thursday: Practice Show at 2 p.m.

A full rehearsal featuring only the Blue Angels. Great for fans focused solely on the squadron.

  • Friday: Dress Rehearsal

Civilian stunt pilots perform around noon, followed by the Blue Angels close to 2 p.m.

  • Saturday: Main Event

The full experience, from vintage warbirds and civilian pilots to the Blues in full formation.

Where to Watch

  • Casino Beach offers the most immersive setup, with sound systems and crowds cheering with every loop and dive.

  • Quietwater Beach Boardwalk is a great alternative if you prefer fewer people and equally strong visuals.

  • On the water, locals anchor offshore for a floating front-row seat. Unforgettable.

Getting There

Expect traffic. By 8 a.m., roads into Pensacola Beach start to clog. Use the Park & Ride from Gulf Breeze or catch the free trolley once you're on the island.

Here's an idea: if you're nearby, walk or bike in. Many do.

Provisions and Perks

Vendors line the beach with snacks, drinks, and aviation merchandise. Evening events, like live music at beach bars or viewing parties on hotel balconies, keep the energy going long after the final flyover.

Book Early

July is high season. If you want a beachfront rental or a hotel room with a view, reserve well in advance. Nearby Gulf Breeze or Downtown Pensacola also offer convenient options with quick beach access.

2. The Homecoming Airshow (November)

  • Setting: NAS Pensacola

  • Atmosphere: Patriotic, close-up, and rooted in Navy tradition

As autumn arrives, the Blue Angels return to where it all began, offering a final salute to fans at their home base. Unlike the beach show, the Homecoming Airshow takes place on the tarmac, giving spectators rare access to aircraft, crews, and behind-the-scenes action.

Schedule Highlights

  • Held over Friday and Saturday, with performances starting around 11 a.m.

  • The Blue Angels typically take flight around 2 p.m.

  • Gates open at 8 a.m. with exhibitions and displays running throughout the day.

What Makes It Special

You're not just watching from a distance. You're right up close with the jets, support crews, and ground exhibits. The base transforms into an aviation festival, complete with autograph booths, food trucks, and interactive displays for all ages.

Where to Watch

  • The NAS Flight Line is the main viewing area, with bleacher seating and open lawn space.

  • You may catch glimpses from outside the base, but nothing compares to being there in person.

Getting There

  • You must arrive by car. Pedestrian and bicycle access is not allowed.
  • Expect full security screenings, so bring a government-issued ID and allow extra time to get through checkpoints.

  • Parking is clearly marked, and shuttles are available from designated lots to the viewing area.

Pro Tip

Aim to arrive by 8:30 a.m. for smooth entry, great seats, and time to explore before showtime.

Extra Nice Experiences

  • Autograph sessions with the pilots

  • Military exhibits and equipment displays

  • Official Blue Angels merchandise tents

  • Friday night fireworks, weather permitting

Where to Stay

November typically offers more availability than summer, but it still gets busy. Book early if you want to stay close to NAS or in walkable neighborhoods like Warrington. Vacation rentals on Pensacola Beach also offer a scenic and convenient option.

What to Pack (and What to Leave Behind)

Pack These

  • Sunscreen, hats, sunglasses

  • Ear protection (a must for children)

  • Water bottles and light snacks

  • Folding chairs or towels

  • Binoculars or a good zoom lens

Skip These

  • Drones, alcohol, and coolers (especially at NAS)

  • Glass containers

  • Large tents or umbrellas that block views

Where to Eat, Drink, and Unwind in Pensacola and Pensacola Beach

Pensacola Beach

Casino Beach Bar & Grille for casual bites and Gulf views

Red Fish Blue Fish for local seafood and outdoor seating

The Dock for easy beachside classics

Downtown Pensacola

The Fish House for upscale Southern seafood

Five Sisters Blues Café for comfort food with live music vibes

Head to Palafox Street for coffee, cocktails, and everything in between

Extra Tips to Make the Most of Both Airshows

  • Don't just watch; listen. The pre-show commentary gives great context for what you're seeing.

  • Stay flexible. Flyovers happen from all directions, and the best moments are often unexpected.

  • Make it social. Community viewing parties, from condo balconies to waterfront patios, add an extra layer of fun.

  • Drink water. Staying hydrated and well-fed is essential on airshow days, especially under the Florida sun.
